What is podcasting?
Podcasting is a new way to listen to radio and tv programmes made by professional and non-professional broadcasters or as they are now known, podcasters. Instead of turning on a radio or tv set to access a show you download it via the internet. WAIT! That might sound complicated but it's really easy. Easy enough for ANYONE to do it, no honestly it;s really that easy :-) I'm going to show you how... Why do I want to listen to podcasts? Well for a start how many tv channels can you receive? tens? Hundreds? and how many radio channels can you receive maybe a thousand if your listening to satellite radio. Currently there are tens of thousands of podcast and videocast channels around the world by both professional and non-professional podcasters. Now thats choice! Each podcast has its own unique style and flavour and like the internet they cover almost every subject imaginable, subjects you will be interested in or will open up new worlds for you to explore. Now imagine your PC, Mac or MP3 player can play you anything you want be it news, reviews, comedy, politics, specialist information for hobbies or interests you have not to mention every convievable form of music. Then you have just imagined podcasting and its here, now ready for you to download easily. Podcasting also offers a greater freedom, as its internet based there are less restrictive laws concerning its content which can be liberating but please ensure you are careful when allowing minors to access certain sites, just like you do when they browse the internet anyway. How can I listen to podcasts? I said this was going to be easy and it is. The easiest way is to download a podcatcher, that is a program that will download the latest episodes of your favourite podcasts and keep them for you to listen to either on your PC or Mac or with your favourite MP3 player. I'll start with the most popular, Apple iTunes. Head on over to: Apple iTunes Download 1) Download and install the application, trust me its as easy as just clicking yes, yes, yes, :-) 2) Now click on iTunes Store and Podcasts or click here, Find some podcasts you like and hit their subscribe button. 3) Listen to your podcasts. Could that be any easier? OK, We could come round and do it for you! :-) There are other podcatchers out there, here are some we recommend: If you want to find new podcasts then you can do worse than search mypodcastdirectory.com To prove a point: 1) Buy a radio, 2) Tune in radio, 3) Listen to radio Podcasting maybe new to you but it is as simple as tuning in your radio! What is a Feed or RSS feed? You've seen a peapod? Well that is a bit like a feed. A feed contains podcast episodes a bit like a peapod contains peas. Your podcatcher looks at the peapod and every time there is a new pea that has grown your podcatcher will gobble it up for you to listen to, a feed therefore feeds your podcatcher! Some podcasts have long feeds with many episodes, some only contain the latest 10 episodes, you might need to visit their website to download any older episodes. i.e. they have stacked those peapods away in a cupboard. You might need the feed address, like a web address to subscribe to new podcasts. |
